Student Wellbeing
At St Catherine’s, the wellbeing of our students is at the centre of everything we do. We believe that every child should feel safe, supported and valued within our school community. Our wellbeing programs help students connect who they are and who they can become with our Catholic faith.
We aim to support each student in reaching their full potential while building positive relationships and developing the skills needed for resilience, perseverance and a love of learning. We encourage our students to live optimistic and hope-filled lives and to make a positive difference in the world.
Mental Health in Primary Schools Initiative (MHiPS)
At our school, student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. As part of our commitment to supporting the social, emotional and mental health of every child, our Wellbeing Leader, Jenny Burnet, together with members of our Leadership Team, is participating in the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) initiative.
MHiPS is a research-based program designed to strengthen mental health support in primary schools across Victoria. It focuses on building whole-school capacity so that all students feel safe, supported and ready to learn. Through this initiative, schools develop consistent approaches to promoting positive mental health, identifying concerns early, and providing appropriate support for students when needed.
As part of the program, school leaders undertake specialised professional learning in areas such as mental health literacy, early intervention, and evidence-based wellbeing practices. This learning will support our school to continue strengthening the ways we care for and support our students.
Our involvement in MHiPS reflects our dedication to creating a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment where every child can thrive both academically and emotionally.

Child Safety and Safeguarding Children
At St Catherine’s, the safety, wellbeing, and personal growth of every student is our highest priority. We are committed to creating a child-safe, respectful, and inclusive environment in line with the Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools (MACS) Child Safe Standards and the Victorian Child Safe Standards.
We actively promote positive behaviour by encouraging all students to be respectful, responsible, and restorative. Students are supported to develop positive relationships, manage their emotions, work collaboratively, demonstrate leadership, and take responsibility for their actions. When challenges arise, we use restorative practices that help students repair relationships and learn from their mistakes.
Bullying is not tolerated at our school. We teach students to recognise bullying, respond appropriately, and seek help from trusted adults. All incidents are taken seriously and addressed promptly, ensuring students are supported to maintain healthy and respectful relationships.
Our school maintains clear policies, procedures, and risk management strategies to prevent harm and safeguard children. All staff receive training in their mandatory reporting obligations, and designated staff ensure concerns are managed confidentially, fairly, and transparently. Leadership and staff regularly review our policies and practices to ensure continuous improvement and compliance with MACS standards.
We empower students to understand and protect their own safety and actively involve families as partners in supporting their child’s wellbeing. Special attention is given to the cultural safety and inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students from diverse backgrounds, and students with disabilities.
Through vigilance, care, respect, and collaboration, our school community works together to maintain a child-safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where every student can thrive and reach their full potential.

Behaviour Expectations
At St Catherine’s, we expect our students to demonstrate positive behaviour that reflects our core values of being respectful, restorative and responsible. We encourage students to build positive and connected relationships with their peers, teachers and the wider community.
Through our wellbeing and social and emotional learning programs, we support students in developing the skills needed to manage their emotions, show empathy for others and respond to challenging situations in constructive ways. Students are encouraged to work collaboratively, show leadership and contribute positively to our school environment.
We also guide students to take responsibility for their actions and understand how their behaviour can affect others.
When difficulties occur, we focus on restorative practices that help students repair relationships, learn from their mistakes and move forward in a positive way.
By promoting these expectations, we aim to create a safe, supportive and inclusive school community where every student feels respected, valued and able to thrive.
Sustainability
At St Catherine’s, we promote sustainability and care for our environment. We encourage students to develop a deep respect for the natural world and understand their responsibility to care for the Earth. Through learning and practical actions, students explore ways to protect the environment and live responsibly. We believe that education plays an important role in shaping knowledge, values and behaviours that contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful world.
Student Voice
Student Voice empowers students to play an active role in shaping their learning environment and school community. Representatives from each year level meet regularly to share ideas, discuss student perspectives, and collaborate on initiatives that make our school an even better place to learn and grow. Through Student Voice, students develop confidence, leadership skills, and a strong sense of responsibility as they work together to represent their peers and contribute to positive change within the St Catherine’s community.
Student Voice supports and promotes:
-
A sense of belonging and inclusion for all students
-
Leadership and teamwork skills
-
Confidence in sharing ideas and opinions respectfully
-
Positive relationships across year levels
-
Opportunities for students to contribute to school decisions
-
Student wellbeing and a supportive school culture
-
Responsibility and pride in our school community
Social and Emotional Learning
Social and emotional learning is another key part of our wellbeing program. We support students in learning how to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships and show empathy for others. Students develop teamwork and leadership skills and learn strategies for handling challenges in constructive ways. These skills help our students grow into confident, caring and capable members of their families, communities and future workplaces.
